Coach’s Corner: Lady Force vs. Mississippi Fuego

Knoxville Lady Force v. Mississippi Fuego

At Regal Stadium, Knoxville, Tennessee

6/22/12

Head Coach, Fields Brown

On a hot and sunny afternoon at Regal Stadium, we were able to kick off our last home match of our inaugural season against the Mississippi Fuego. Looking to avenge an earlier season loss, the girls took the field ready to give our fans a great showing to wrap up the campaign.

Unlike the early game mistakes that plagued us in May, the girls were able to come out flying. An early corner forced two great saves from the Fuego keeper, as Ashley Howarth’s efforts were denied. It seemed that this was going to be a sign of what was to come, as we struggled to find the back of the net.

After great saves,  a shot off of the post, and some last-gasp defensive efforts by the Fuego,  we were able to break through shortly before the half. Anna McClung was able to pick up a loose ball in the midfield, beat a defender and put a good shot on frame. It gave us a much deserved lead to go into the dressing room, although it could have been more.

The second half wasn’t as sharp, although we continued to see success down the flanks through our wide players. We struggled to find a final ball into the area, and it seemed that Fuego came out of the half time talk a bit inspired. As the game drug on, we still created a plethora of chances, although it remained 1-nil. Finally, with a few minutes left a great cross from Caroline Brown by the end line was volleyed home nicely from Dugghan Hahn. As the final whistle blew, a 2-nil result was definitely deserved.

The Ladies were able to end our home campaign on a positive note. In the three games we were able to show progress in each match, and gave the home fans much to enjoy. With a season-ending trip to league leaders Gulf Coast Texans this week, we hope to continue to improve on every match and put our best effort in so far.
